GAA Conference 2011: "Wa(h)re 'Kultur'" - Cultural Heritage, Revitalisation and the Renaissance of the Idea of Culture
Welcome to the conference website of the German Anthropological Association GAA (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde DGV). The GAA will hold its next biannual meeting in Vienna from September, 14th, until September, 17th. We are very pleased to organise this conference in collaboration with our Austrian partners:
- Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology, University of Vienna (Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie der Universität Wien),
- Institute for Social Anthropology, Austrian Academy of Sciences (Institut für Sozialanthropologie der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften) and the
- Museum of Ethnology (Kunsthistorisches Museum mit Museum für Völkerkunde und Österreichischem Theatermuseum)

General Information
The Conference
Please make sure that your name tag is well in sight for the duration of the whole conference. Do wear your name tag also on the 4th day at the museum, as it is the only way to recognize you from the rest of the museum’s guests. During the conference, student co-workers, who you can easily recognize by their blue t-shirt, will be at your disposal. For any requests, do not hesitate to refer to them.

Additional Information
Additionally, practical information on local restaurants and bars (free vouchers included), tourist information on current highlights and sightseeing in Vienna, information on the public transport, child care, lost & found box, as well as the opportunity to leave a message to other participants at the conference, is available for you at the registration desk.
Publisher’s Information
On the 4th floor at NIG you can find specialized publishers presenting their latest books and reviews, which are also available for purchase at a discount price.
Internet Access
During the conference there is the possibility to use the w-lan connection for free on the premises of NIG. On the 4th floor in NIG, you can also find several computers available to you for free. For any questions or further information, do not hesitate to refer to our student co-workers.
Copy
On the ground floor at NIG you can find our copy zone. At the Facultas Shop right next to it you can easily purchase copy cards to copy anything you wish.

For urgent phone calls, please refer to the conference office on the 4th floor or to the registration desk on the ground floor.
Coffee Breaks
On Thursday and Friday during the coffee breaks you can serve yourself a coffee at one of our three coffee stations (2nd and 4th floor at NIG, and 1st floor at the Institute for Sociology – see plan of premises)
Lunch Break
Lunch is not included into the conference fee and shall be planned and organized separately. In the conference papers handed out to you at the time of your registration, you can find a list of and some useful information on local restaurants near the conference venues. You are also very welcome to enjoy a meal at the university’s MENSA, which you can find on the 7th floor at NIG. At the information desk on the ground floor you can receive further information on the menus and eventually some vouchers for the local restaurants named on the list.
Documentation
We would like to document the conference via digital photo and video devices, audio recorders etc. in order to place the information on the conference homepage. This is possible only with your allowance. If you do not wish any photographs or videos of you and your presentation, please refer to our student co-workers in charge of the documentation.

Film Program
On the 15 and 16 September young students of Cultural and Social Anthropology are showing short documentaries during the midday breaks. You will have the chance to see these also on the 17 September at the museum.
Conference Party
16 September 2011 Beginning: 8 pm The conference party takes place at Palais Clam Gallas, the Institut Français of Vienna.
The Palais dates back to the 19th century and is situated in a fabulous garden. At the welcoming salons on the 1st floor, a delicious buffet of Viennese dishes and specialties (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) is awaiting you: appetizers, warm dishes and various desserts. Drinks include water, juices, wine and beer. DJ-Pitralon with his fervent rhythms and beats is looking forward to animate you on the ground floor of the Palais. Ashtrays are placed to your convenience at the entrance of the garden. We wish you a pleasant evening and a joyful celebration!
Guided Exhibition

Straight after the closing ceremony there is the opportunity to visit the current exhibition with the title “The Culture of Culture Revolution” at the Museum of Ethnology.
